Immersion dyeing is not suitable for every artificial flower. Plastic petals may not absorb water-based dye, while foam, glue, flocking, and decorative coatings may be damaged by soaking.
Look closely at the petal edge and underside.
Fabric petals usually show woven or nonwoven fibers. Molded plastic petals have a continuous surface. Foam flowers feel light and compressible, while coated flowers may have a rubber-like or waxy surface.
The existing color also affects the result. A pale cream flower can usually be changed more easily than a dark red or black flower. Dye adds color but does not normally make a dark base become white.
Test the product for water resistance and color transfer. Place one drop of water on a concealed area and blot it with a white cloth.

Acrylic paint can be diluted and applied as a fine mist, wash, or hand-painted accent.
It works mainly as a surface coating. Excess paint can make fabric petals stiff, so test the dilution and application distance first.
Ink can produce translucent gradients and detailed color effects. It may spread unpredictably through porous fabric, which can be useful for natural shading but difficult for exact batch matching.
Use suitable ventilation and follow the safety instructions for the colorant and carrier.
Dry brushing uses a small amount of paint on a nearly dry brush. It is useful for adding darker petal edges, leaf veins, or weathered effects without recoloring the complete flower.
Clean dust and surface residue before applying color. Dye or paint placed over dirt may create uneven spots.
Separate flower heads from the main arrangement when possible. Protect stems, leaves, stamens, berries, and labels that should retain their original color.

Allow every layer to dry before deciding whether more color is required. Wet color often looks darker than the finished surface.

Do not stack petals while the surface remains wet or tacky. Contact between flowers can transfer color and change the petal shape.
